ANN ARBOR—As Detroit sports facilities and their owners are in the news: Mark Rosentraub, professor of sports economics at the U-M School of Kinesiology, said that historically, Detroit has not done a good job using sports and stadiums to revitalize the city.

In a nutshell, stadiums in Detroit have not been built with an integrated plan in mind to attract the residential along with retail to support that residential growth, he said.

But change is always an opportunity, Rosentraub said, and Detroit can take definite steps to take full advantage of the sports business already there. As team owners and venues are aging, the next generation of owners will have hefty decisions to make, he said.
