Assistant secretary of state to deliver inaugural lecture

EVENT: John F. Turner, assistant secretary of state for oceans, international environmental, and scientific affairs, will deliver the inaugural lecture in the new Distinguished Speaker Series of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment.

BACKGROUND: John Turner was sworn in as assistant secretary of state for oceans, international environmental, and scientific affairs on Nov. 13, 2001. Turner heads state department programs and activities concerning the environment, climate change, oceans affairs and science and technology including HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. While director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1989-1993), Turner established 55 new National Wildlife Refuges, earning recognition and awards from organizations including The Nature Conservancy, the National Audubon Society, and the Land Trust Alliance.

The Distinguished Speaker Series of the School of Natural Resources and Environment is a newly focused effort to bring highly experienced leaders to speak to the U-M community. The goal is to inform the community about environmental and scientific issues at the forefront of national and international policymaking.
