TIME: 7:30 p.m., April 4

EVENT: Georgetown University linguist Deborah Tannen, author of the best seller” You’re Wearing THAT? Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation,” will speak at the University of Michigan.

Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, has written extensively on the way people may confuse a speaker’s intentions because of differences in things like gender, ethnicity and age. Her latest book is now ranked fifth on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

In” Talking From 9 to 5,” she investigated” how women and men’s conversational styles affect who gets heard, who gets credit, and what gets done at work.” In” You Just Don’t Understand,” she explored the ways different communication styles can create misunderstandings between men and women. Her new book looks at communication between mothers and adult daughters.

“Language has a critical role in human interactions, and Deborah Tannen is a prominent scholar who makes academic work on communication styles accessible to a wide audience,” said Patrice Speeter Beddor, who chairs U-M’s linguistics department.

PLACE: The Michigan League Ballroom, 911 N. University, Ann Arbor.
