Dingell and jurists celebrate Constitution Day at U-M

DATE: Monday, Sept. 18. The speech is at 4 p.m. followed by the video and panel discussion starting about 5:15 p.m.

EVENT: The University of Michigan will celebrate the 219th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution Monday with a keynote address by U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich.

Dingell represents Michigan’s 15th District including Ann Arbor and is recognized as the ” Dean of the House” for serving more than 50 years in the U.S. House, longer than any other member. Terry McDonald, dean of U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, will introduce Dingell and chair the session.

Following Dingell’s talk, a special 32-minute video featuring Supreme Court justices Stephen Breyer, Anthony Kennedy, and Sandra Day O’Connor will be shown.

A panel, moderated by U-M Law School Dean Evan Caminker, will briefly comment on the video and take questions from the audience. The panel members are Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly; U-M history professor Matt Lassiter; U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge David McKeague; and U-M Law School professor Richard Primus.

Richard Friedman, Law School professor, and Maris Vinovskis, a professor of history, public policy and political studies at U-M’s Institute for Social Research, co-chaired the planning of the Constitution Day activities.
