International conference to study PKMs

ANN ARBOR—The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan will host a conference promoting international research into parallel kinematic machines (PKMs) and their use in manufacturing, Sept. 13-15. The Parallel Kinematic Machines International Conference will be held at the Michigan League, 911 N. University on U-M’s Central Campus.

The conference is expected to draw researchers and practicing engineers from Asia, Europe and North America. Presented papers will address subjects including the kinematics, dynamics, synthesis, and control of PKMs, as well as manufacturing performance attributes such as precision and repeatability.

The conference will recognize three honorary chairs who are world-renowned researchers and innovators in machining technology: Prof. Francesco Jovane, from the Italian National Research Council; Prof. Yoram Koren, director of the Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Machining Systems at U-M; and Paul Sheldon, founder of Sheldon Works and the inventor of one of the first parallel kinematic machine tools. The executive chair and vice chair of the conference are Prof. Nicolae Orlandea of the U-M and Prof. Gloria Weins of the University of Florida.

Registration is $175 per person, $125 for students. The cost includes lunches and a banquet dinner on Sept. 14 at the Spirit of Ford in Dearborn.
