U-M’s Vloet wins UPAA national university photographer of the year award

ANN ARBOR—The University Photographers’ Association of America has named Martin Vloet its University Photographer of the Year.

U-M photographers Scott Galvin and Lin Jones also received awards from the national professional organization for universityVloet, a photographer with U-M Photo Services since 2000, received the honor during UPAA’s national conference in Utah earlier this month. His awards included first place in the Science and Research category for a chemist holding a molecular model; second place in News and Features for a shot of Al Gore at work on his computer before a speech; and third and honorable mention in Sports.

Galvin won two awards at the annual UPAA print competition: first place in Portraits for his image of a jazz trumpeter, and second in Science and Research. Jones won the year-end Portraits title in the monthly image competition.

Vloet also took the UPAA overall title in the UPAA monthly image competition and category titles in Sports, News and Features, and Science and Research and first and second place in the General Publications category, based largely on his images for the U-M Health System’s Michigan Difference campaign.

“National recognition by one’s peers is the greatest honor,” Vloet said.
