ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Tauber Institute for Global Operations has been named as a finalist for the first ever UPS George D. Smith Prize, an award presented by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

Created to strengthen ties between academia and industry, the award recognizes excellence in academic programs that are preparing students to become practitioners of analytics and operations research. Eighteen schools across the nation applied for the recognition, which carries a $10,000 cash award.

“We are extremely proud and humble to have been selected as finalist for this award,” said Roman Kapuscinski, the Ford Motor Company Co-Director of the Tauber Institute.

For nearly 20 years, the Tauber Institute has developed and delivered superior talent for positions in operations through a multidisciplinary education, comprehensive leadership training and challenging team projects in industry, he said.

“Tauber Institute for Global Operations has relentlessly focused on preparing students to be good practitioners of operations research, management science, and analytics,” Kapuscinski said. “Our curriculum combines solid technical training with a broad understanding of business, as well as teamwork and elements of leadership. Recruiters and multiple industrial organizations repeatedly tell us that our graduates are well prepared to be operations management leaders. They are the top talent with a track record of successful implementations.”

The other finalists are the Cornell University School of Operations Research and Engineering Master of Engineering Program and the Lehigh University Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The prize winner will be announced April 16 at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research in Huntington Beach, Calif.

The UPS George D. Smith Prize was named in honor of the late UPS chief executive officer who was a staunch patron of operations research. More information about the prize can be found at: www.informs.org/Recognize-Excellence/INFORMS-Prizes-Awards/UPS-George-D.-Smith-Prize.
