U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz to receive Champion of Science Award

ANN ARBOR—U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek, will be receiving the Champion of Science Award from The Science Coalition on the University of Michigan campus on Monday (Aug. 28).

The Science Coalition is a 64-member organization of universities that promotes the value of federal funding of basic research. The Champion of Science Award is presented to members of Congress who have been active supporters of research issues in Congress during their tenure.

U-M is one of four Michigan universities that are members of the national coalition.

Schwarz, a U-M graduate, physician and former CIA operative, was a member of the Michigan Senate from 1987 to 2002, rising to president pro tempore. He was elected to a two-year term in the U.S. House in 2004, where he serves on the House Science Committee.

TIME: 12:15 p.m.

PLACE: The award will be presented at a lunch in then Boulevard Room of Pierpont Commons on the U-M campus. Members of the media are welcome to attend.
