U.S. Senate confirms Jose-Marie Griffiths’ appointment to NCLIS

ANN ARBOR—The U.S. Senate recently confirmed President Clinton’s nomination of Jose-Marie Griffiths to the United States National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS). She is executive director and chief information officer of the Information Technology Division at the University of Michigan.

NCLIS, established in 1970, is a permanent, independent agency of the federal government composed of 16 members, serving five-year terms. The commission advises the president and the Congress on national and international library and information services policies and plans.

“Dr. Griffiths is recognized nationally and internationally as an information technology expert,” said U-M President Lee C. Bollinger. “I have been impressed with her expertise and enthusiasm for information technology and am very pleased with the leadership she is providing as chief information officer and director of Michigan’s Information Technology Division. We also are honored to have her national prominence recognized by this prestigious appointment.”

Said Griffiths, “I am indeed honored to accept the role of Commissioner for the NCLIS. The Commission deals with many important issues, including electronic government information dissemination, digital libraries, universal access to information and telecommunications services, intellectual property, and human resources development for the digital arena. I’m interested in all of these and other NCLIS issues and they are of interest to the U-M, as well. As policies, protocols, and standards for information services evolve, the University will be very involved in the discussions.”

Griffiths’ degrees include the Ph.D. in information science and the B.Sc., with honors, in physics. Both degrees are from the University College of London University. Honors include research awards from the Special Libraries Association (1995) and the American Association of Information Science, ASIS (1990). Griffiths was the president of ASIS in 1993.
