Art Museum’s magical fantasy toy-box adventure
ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Museum of Art‘s free Family Day activities, noon-4 p.m. Dec. 15, will include storytelling, magic demonstrations and French lessons for kids.
Celebrating its exhibit “Images d’Epinal,” the Museum invites families to experience activities for both children and adults. A costumed storyteller will read classic French folk tales, including “Puss in Boots” and “Cinderella.” After listening to the story, visitors can look for corresponding illustrations on the gallery walls.
Participants in Family Day can put on a set of headphones and listen to French folk songs. French teachers will be on hand to teach funny, silly and useful French phrases. At 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., a professional magician will perform.
Face painting will be available using some of the special colors featured by Epinal printers. And, since the Epinal printers produced imaginative board and card games and paper cutouts, there will be plenty of reproductions to play with. Visitors can explore a giant-sized “Game of the Goose, “complete with huge dice and playing pieces. They can even walk on the game. As an added attraction, the Museum’s gift shop has stocked Epinal-inspired books, toys and games.
“Images d’Epinal” will continue through Jan. 5. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; and Sunday 10-5 p.m. and will be closed Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Admission to the Museum is free.
