Teacher, students win U-M awards for work in Greek and Latin
ANN ARBOR—Michaela Samson of Martin Luther King, Jr., High School in Detroit has been named the Outstanding Teacher of Latin in the Michigan Secondary Schools for 1997 by the University of Michigan’s Department of Classical Studies “Over the past 10 years, Dr. Samson has built a flourishing Latin Program at Martin Luther King, Jr., High School in Detroit, a program that is actually part of the Math, Science and Technology Program,” said Prof. Sharon Herbert, chair of the U-M Department of Classical Studies. “She has accomplished this through her deep commitment, her hard work, and her skills in teaching and learning. She is known by her colleagues in Detroit and in the state of Michigan as one of our real ‘doers.'”
Samson, a graduate of Wayne State University’s College of Education, has been at Martin Luther King, Jr., High School since 1985. She received a Ph.D. in history and archaeology from the University of Bucharest, Romania, in 1983. Her students have consistently placed in the top three places in competitions that include the Quizball at the Ludi Detroitenses XIII contest in 1996 and the Michigan Junior Classical League Spirit Contests.
