U-M makes Kennedy Executive Orders available on Web

ANN ARBOR—Beginning the day after his inauguration Jan. 20, 1961, until shortly before his death Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy issued 214 Executive Orders. These orders ranged from his first, “Providing for an Expanded Program of Food Distribution for Needy Families” to his last on Nov. 9, 1963, “Creating an Emergency Board to Investigate a Dispute Between the Florida East Coast Railway Company and Certain of Its Employees” and include directives establishing the Peace Corps and emergency instructions to government agencies at the time of the Cuban missile crisis.

The University of Michigan has made these Executive Orders available on the World Wide Web at http://www.lib.umich.edu/libhome/Documents.center/jfkeo.html through the Documents Center at the U-M Library. The project, prepared as an independent study for U-M’s School of Information, allows the viewer to search the Orders by date, keyword, number or title, finding such Orders as “President’s Committee on Equal Employment (E.O. #10925), “Equal Opportunity in Housing” (E.O. #11063), “President’s Commission on the Status of Women” (E.O. #10980), “Establishing the President’s Council on Aging” (E.O. #11022), and “Assistance for the Removal of Obstruction of Justice and Suppression of Unlawful Combinations within the State of Alabama” (E.O. 11111 and 11118).
