A recent report claims that more than 30 percent of bridges in the United States are unsafe for traffic because of structural damage or insufficiency. The report, compiled by the Associated Press and based on Federal Highway Administration Records, found that more than 182,000 of the nation’s 581,000-odd bridges were listed as deficient as of late June 1996.

University of Michigan bridge expert Andrzej “Andy” Nowak is available to talk with reporters about what must be done to improve bridge construction and the implications of the report. Nowak can be reached at (313) 764-9299, or by e-mail at [email protected]
