U-M education dean will address teaching reform
EVENT ANNAOUNCEMENT
DATE: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2013
PLACE: Anderson House Office Building, 5th Floor Mackinac Room, 124 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, Mich.
EVENT: On the heels of the recent Mackinac Conference and renewed calls there for educational reform, the next Wolverine Caucus will feature the dean of the University of Michigan School of Education, who will detail what the university is doing across the country to transform teacher education.
Deborah Loewenberg Ball, the William H. Payne Collegiate Professor of Education and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, will talk about how U-M is working to change the face of teacher preparation through its teacher-training programs and with the launch of the new national organization, TeachingWorks, which Ball directs.
An elementary school educator for more than 15 years, Ball continues to teach mathematics to children every summer through a unique elementary math lab. Now in its 10th year, the program is designed to help educators think about new ways to approach teaching, as they participate in a live lab session.
Ball also is a national leader in education reform who has served on several national and international commissions and panels focused on policy initiatives and the improvement of education. She currently chairs the Michigan Council for Educator Effectiveness, a group charged with designing Michigan’s system of educator evaluation.
The Wolverine Caucus provides an opportunity for alumni and friends of U-M, who work in and around the state capital, to hear from university leaders on timely, relevant public policy subjects during the legislative session.
