ANN ARBOR—Following her visit to India last month, University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman has issued a call for proposals to launch new programs and build on ideas generated during the trip.

The call asks for proposals that will create greater connections with India and provide places where U-M students can explore India through coursework, research, internships and service learning. Potential partners could involve universities, nongovernmental organizations or alumni.

“Projects may range from creating a new study-abroad program that brings U-M and Indian students together for a summer course at an Indian higher-education institution to U-M faculty research projects that include opportunities for U-M students to serve as research assistants on the ground in India,” said Amy Conger, assistant vice provost for global and engaged education.

The call for proposals is open to all faculty and staff across U-M’s Ann Arbor campus and will provide up to $200,000 total in presidential funding over a period of three years.

“We hope to facilitate the creation of lasting infrastructure to support the engagement of U-M students in India, and provide unparalleled learning opportunities,” said James Holloway, vice provost for global and engaged education.

Proposals are due Feb. 28 and decisions will be announced by mid-March. Funding will be available in May.
