DATE: 2-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2015

EVENT: “Inextinguishable—A Conversation with Detroit Artist Tyree Guyton”

For nearly 30 years, the abandoned houses that dot Detroit’s Heidelberg Street have provided the backdrop to a kaleidoscopic display of outdoor art installations that aim to inspire and provide healing to the local community. In 2013 and 2014, a series of 12 arson fires gutted six installations on the street, the most devastating assault on the Heidelberg Project in more than 20 years.

Renowned artist Tyree Guyton has used this opportunity to redouble his efforts and to rebuild and reimagine the project. In his first major public appearance since the fires, Guyton will discuss new construction on Heidelberg Street, a forthcoming history of the site, a new museum, his plans for future work with the local community, and ideas for new art resulting from the fires.

Other featured participants include Jenenne Whitfield of the Heidelberg Project and Larry Gant, U-M professor of social work and art and design.

PLACE: 4th floor, Rackham Building, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor

INFORMATION: The event is free to the public. A reception and meet and greet will take place immediately following. Visit myumi.ch/JgM8a.
