NPR journalist Michel Martin to speak at U-M

EVENT: Michel Martin, a correspondent for National Public Radio, will deliver this year’s Mullin Welch Lecture at the University of Michigan.

The Center for the Education of Women’s Mullin Welch Series brings lecturers to campus who exemplify characteristics of creativity, strength of character and expansive vision.

Martin has spent more than 25 years as a journalist and can be heard across NPR news programs, bringing her deep reporting and interviewing experience on topics including education, families, faith, race and social issues. She came to NPR from ABC News in 2006 and launched “Tell Me More,” a one-hour daily news and talk show.

Martin has been honored by numerous organizations, including the Candace Award for Communications from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. At ABC, she contributed to various programs and specials, including the network’s award-winning coverage of September 11, a documentary on the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy, a critically acclaimed AIDS special and reports for the ongoing series “America in Black and White.”

The 2015 Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change will be presented before the lecture to Sandra Gregerman, director of the U-M Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and Edward Goldman, adjunct associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

A reception will follow the lecture, which is free to the public, but registration is requested at myumi.ch/Lq7W6.
