U-M hosts symposium on the well-being of student-athletes

EVENT: “Promoting the Well-Being of Student Athletes: What the Research Tells Us” will convey the results of studies and interventions by the University of Michigan and the NCAA to improve the well-being of student athletes.

Speakers include:

  • Lydia Bell, associate director of research, NCAA. “Using NCAA Data to Understand Student-Athlete Well-Being”
  • Philip Veliz, research assistant professor, U-M Institute for Research on Women and Gender. “Competitive Sports Participation and Substance Use Among Adolescents and Young Adults: Making Sense of a Paradox”
  • Daniel Eisenberg, associate professor of health management and policy, U-M School of Public Health and Population Studies Center. “Athletes Connected: Supporting Mental Health Among Student Athletes”
  • Susan Jekielek, director of education archives, U-M Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. “Sharing Data and the NCAA Student-Athlete Experiences Data Archive”

Discussants include Darryl Conway, U-M associate athletic director for student-athlete health and welfare, and Tom Paskus, principal research scientist at the NCAA.
