EVENT:Poets at Michigan, Then and Now

In honor of U-M’s 200th birthday, this symposium will look at the rich legacy of poetry at Michigan, including the work of Robert Frost, the university’s first poet in residence; Robert Hayden; Joseph Brodsky; and many more.

The first of three panels will address early poetry at U-M, Frost, and the legacy left by Avery Hopwood, the founder of the prestigious campus literary prize bearing his name. A second panel examines the literary accomplishments of mid-century poets like Hayden, Brodsky, W. H. Auden and Czeslaw Milosz. A final panel will read from their own contemporary works of poetry. Each panel will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The symposium will also debut an original short film about Robert Frost’s time on campus.
