Prospective student Spring Commencement speaker deadline
ANN ARBOR—The deadline for the University of Michigan’s prospective student Spring Commencement speakers to submit speeches for consideration is 5 p.m. March 10. The commencement will be held at 9:30 a.m. May 1 in Michigan Stadium.
The competition is open to U-M students who will be receiving a bachelor’s degree during Winter Term 1999 or Summer Term 1999. Submissions consist of a typed draft of the speech?five minutes or less in length?as well as an audio-cassette of the author delivering the speech. Students also are asked to submit a curriculum vitae or resume, including an e-mail address and local phone number where they can be reached. A cover letter is not necessary.
A committee of students, faculty and staff selects the student commencement speaker. David Schoem, assistant vice president for academic and student affairs, who served on the selection committee in 1997 and 1998, said the committee looks for a speech that focuses on a few important points, addresses the interests of a broad range of students and parents, and is brief and well written.
Barbara MacAdam, vice chair of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, head of Library Education and Information Services and a member of last year’s selection committee, said the judges looked for entries that reflected the values of the academic experience and were likely to capture the audience’s imagination.
Submit entries to the Office of the Vice President for Communications, 2040 Fleming Administration Building, Campus Zip 1340. Attention: Student Speaker Entries. For more information, contact Beth Moceri, (734) 615-0520 or by e-mail [email protected].
