ANN ARBOR—The University Housing office at the University of Michigan is offering alternative meal options for Muslim students during Ramadan, a period of great significance for Muslims worldwide.

In a program initiated in 1991, University Housing residents or Entr?e contract holders can apply for a rebate for the Ramadan period by completing a Board Termination Request form available at all residence hall front desks, the Entree office, or the Housing Information office.

In addition to the options available through University Housing, the Muslim Community Association is providing free evening dinners to Muslim students at the Ann Arbor Mosque, across from the Northwood Housing Fire Station on Plymouth Road, throughout Ramadan, which ends Jan. 19 or 20.

During Ramadan, it is incumbent upon all Muslims who are physically able to fast between a morning meal and an evening meal. Fasting during Ramadan, the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, means abstaining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for 30 days, according to the Muslim Students Association.
