ANN ARBOR—Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the University of Michigan Communicative Disorders Clinic annual conference, June 1-2, at the Marriott Hotel Conference Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
In her speech, Neal will describe her recovery from a massive stroke that left her unable to move and speak, and the role family and friends, as well as professionals, played in her long rehabilitation. She will also participate in several discussion groups during the two-day “Opening Doors” seminar for stroke survivors and their families. Neal won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her role in the film “Hud,” and is particularly proud of her performances in the films “A Face in the Crowd” and “The Subject was Roses.” Neal’s latest film is “Cookie’s Fortune.”
The conference program also includes presentations by a wide variety of professionals on topics such as living with chronic illness, healing through humor, art and music therapy, alternative approaches to healing, and coping with the emotional hurdles in care-giving.
Among the featured speakers are Valerie Eaton Griffith, the founder of the Stroke Association and the Stroke Dysphasic Support Service in England; and Audrey Holland, a University of Arizona expert in aphasia rehabilitation.
