Regents approve faculty appointments

ANN ARBOR—Faculty appointments, with tenure, approved by the University of Michigan Regents at their Sept. 16-17 meeting included:

Norman J. Betts, a faculty member at the New Jersey Dental School, will be associate professor of dentistry at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

Sara B. Blair, a faculty member at the University of Virginia, will be associate professor of English at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

Iain D. Boyd, a faculty member at Cornell University, will be associate professor of aerospace engineering at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

Gary J. Fisher, a senior associate research scientist at U-M, will be associate professor of dermatology, effective Sept. 17.

Kevin K. Gaines, a faculty member at the University of Texas, Austin, will be associate professor of history and of Afroamerican and African studies at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

Jinyong Hahn, a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, will be associate professor of economics at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

David M. Halperin, a faculty member at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, will be professor of English at U-M, effective Sept. 1.

Barry H. Kantowitz, a faculty member at the University of Washington, will be professor of industrial and operations engineering at U-M, effective Jan. 1, 2000.

John L. King, a faculty member at the University of California, Irvine, will be professor and dean of the School of Information at U-M, effective Jan. 1. 2000. (His nomination to the U-M positions was announced Aug. 23.)

Daniel J. Klionsky, a faculty member at the University of California, Davis, will be professor of biology at U-M, effective Sept. 1, 2000.

Pamela Trotman Reid, a visiting professor and research scientist at U-M, will be professor of education in the School of Education and research scientist at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, effective Sept. 1.

John E. Schulenberg, adjunct associate professor of developmental psychology and senior associate research scientist at U-M, will be associate professor of psychology, effective Sept. 1.

Penny M. Von Eschen, a faculty member at the University of Texas, Austin, will be associate professor of history and of Afroamerican and African studies at U-M, effective Sept. 1.
