ANN ARBOR—The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan is sponsoring its 6th Annual Community Service-Learning Fair, an open-house for community-based organizations and students in the health professions schools at U-M.

The fair will take place Oct. 4, in the School of Public Health, and will run from 3 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

More than forty community-based organizations from all over Michigan will participate this year, including ACCESS Community Health Center, Food Gatherers, Dawn Farm, Corner Health Center, Washtenaw County Public Health Department, City of Detroit Department of Health, and the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan.

During the fair, students can arrange experiential learning and community service opportunities that they can integrate into their course work, and look for employment or internships. Faculty may use this opportunity to talk about research ideas, arrange for guest speakers for the classroom, or explore other community components for their courses.

The Community Service-Learning Fair is held annually at the School of Public Health in commemoration of the life and accomplishments of the late Dr. Albert H. Wheeler. Dr. Wheeler, a graduate of the School of Public Health, received a M.S.P.H. degree and a Dr.PH in health and public hygiene in 1938 and 1944. Dr. Wheeler later became the first African American to hold a tenured faculty position at U-M. Dr. Wheeler was also a dedicated civil rights activist and community leader. He was the first, and only, African-American mayor of Ann Arbor.
