Prof. Stephen Pollock named to Herrick Professorship
ANN ARBOR—The Regents of the University of Michigan recently appointed Stephen Pollock, U-M professor of industrial and operations engineering, to the Herrick Professorship of Manufacturing.
Pollock is a leading scholar internationally recognized for his work in the mathematical modeling of systems, sequential decision analysis, and operations research in public systems. He has authored numerous scholarly publications and books, was senior editor of IIE Transactions, and currently serves as associate editor of both Operations Research and Management Science. He has served on the Army Science Board, various National Research Council committees, and as a consultant to organizations and agencies, including the U. S. Department of Transportation.
Pollock is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Pollock received his B.Eng. degree in engineering physics from Cornell University in 1958 and S.M. (physics) and Ph.D. (physics and operations research) degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960 and 1964, respectively. He joined the faculty of the U-M College of Engineering as an associate professor of industrial and operations engineering in 1969 and was promoted to professor in 1974. He served as chair of that department from 1981 through 1990, and has also contributed to the administration of the College as a member of its Executive Committee.
The Herrick professorship was established in 1995 by the Herrick Foundation of Detroit to recognize distinguished work in interdisciplinary, mission-oriented manufacturing education and research. The five-year appointment to the chair alternates between the University’s College of Engineering and School of Business Administration and is designated for faculty associated with the U-M Tauber Manufacturing Institute.
