ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan Regents, at their April 13-14 meeting, approved the design for the proposed Life Sciences Institute Building, to be located southeast of the proposed Palmer Drive Parking Structure.

“In support of the Life Sciences Institute’s mission, a 230,000-gross-square-foot state-of-the-art research laboratory building will be built,” said U-M Executive Vice President Robert Kasdin.

“The facility will be six floors (one floUor of which will be below grade), and a penthouse for mechanical equipment. The facility will consist of approximately 142,000 net square feet of space, housing ‘wet’ research laboratories and laboratory support spaces, core laboratory areas, principal investigator offices, interacting spaces, Institute administration offices, a combined gallery/lobby space and small library.

“The preliminary estimate for construction for $62 million, plus soft costs and contingency of $19 million, and casework and equipment including contingency and soft costs of $15 million.”

The Institute, a research complex that will serve as a hub for cross-disciplinary research and teaching in the life sciences, is part of the U-M’s broader Life Science Initiative.
