Advisory: Statement regarding student incident

The following statement was released today (Dec. 14) by University of Michigan Provost Nancy Cantor, Vice President for Student Affairs E. Royster Harper, and Athletic Director Bill Martin:

We have learned of an incident early this morning involving U-M student and football player James Whitley. Coach Lloyd Carr has announced that Whitley has been dismissed from the football team, effective immediately. The University will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The University’s Code of Student Conduct addresses such behavior both on- and off-campus, and we have the authority to pursue disciplinary action under the Code. Matters of student discipline and student academic status are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Under FERPA, the University may not discuss any disciplinary actions that might be taken.
