Listening to Puerto Rico Teach-in: One year since Hurricane Maria

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20

EVENT: Four members of the University of Michigan community—all natives of Puerto Rico—will participate in a panel discussion about the aftermath of Hurricane Maria on the one-year anniversary of the deadly storm.

Panelists:

  • Luis Trelles: Producer at Radio Ambulante and 2018-19 Knight Wallace Fellow who reported in Puerto Rico throughout the hurricane and aftermath.
  • Rose Figueroa: U-M alumna working in Detroit led collection/coordination efforts post-Maria for five Michigan cities and worked closely with U-M to coordinate relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
  • Larry La Fountain-Stokes: Interim director of Latina/o Studies Program and associate professor of Spanish.
  • Amilcar Matos-Moreno: Doctoral candidate at the School of Public Health.

Moderator Will Potter, senior academic innovation fellow, will lead as the team shares narratives of loss and recovery witnessed firsthand or heard as they went about the island collecting stories for a university online learning event focused on the hurricane recovery.

During the teach-in event, there will be an opportunity for audience members to share their own stories about Hurricane Maria and Puerto Rico, or to ask the panelists questions.
