ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan accepts nearly 5,500 new students each year, but only 10-20 of those U-M students are awarded $52,000 by the Sidney J. and Irene Shipman Scholarship fund.
Each year U-M faculty members select 40 U-M applicants who have high academic achievement and talent in the arts and sciences to interview for the scholarship, which includes an $8,500 award, renewable for four years, plus room and board, worth approximately $5,600 a year.
Students who are interviewed but not selected as Shipman Scholars receive a $1,200 award, renewable for four years, and membership in the Shipman Society. All Shipman Society members in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are also awarded an additional Dean’s Merit Scholarship ranging from $7,500 to $15,000.
The Shipman Scholars may select their residence hall and become members of the Shipman Society. The Society sponsors the “Shipman Speaker Series” which gives students and faculty the opportunity to interact with prominent individuals throughout the University. Shipman Scholars also attend a fall welcome reception with senior faculty and administrators, and priority for admission to classes and special academic programs.
Sidney J. Shipman earned his U-M undergraduate degree in 1917 and an M.D. in 1919. He moved to San Francisco, where he began practicing medicine in 1923. Shipman specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis and other diseases of the chest and served as president of the National Tuberculosis Association and of the California Medical Association. Shipman died in 1981; when his wife, Irene, died in 1994, she established the Shipman Scholarship. The first awards from the scholarship were made in 1996.
