Passion, fury, delight, tragedy, and triumph
ANN ARBOR—You just can’t ask for much more—passion, fury, delight, tragedy, and triumph all bound together in dance and opera. And it’s all coming to Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater, thanks to the partnership of the University of Michigan and the University Musical Society.
Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” combines the Peter Sparling Dance Company, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the UMS Choral Union and U-M’s Martin Katz as music director.
When Peter Sparling, U-M professor of dance and former Martha Graham dancer, and Martin Katz, U-M professor of music dubbed “dean of accompanists” by the Los Angeles Times, put their heads together, the Orfeo Project was born and has evolved into a multi-faceted collaboration that will culminate in a full scale, professional cast production with performances Nov. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. All performances are in the Michigan Theater. Tickets are available through the UMS Box Office located in the Michigan League or by calling at (734) 764-2538.
This collaborative production will feature soloists Ewa Podles, Lisa Saffer, and Isabel Bayrakdarian in performances Nov. 9 and 11. Pei Yi Wang, Kathryn Alexander and Loren Allardyce will be the featured soloists for the Nov. 10 performance.
In addition to the performances, U-M’s Faculty Consortium on Contexts for Classics and the UMS are sponsoring “OVERTURES: A panel discussion of ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’ in Music and Dance.” The panel’s keynote speaker will be Clifford Cranna, artistic administrator for the San Francisco Opera. Panelists will include U-M faculty members Melissa Gross, associate professor of kinesiology; David Halperin, professor of English literature; and Yopie Prins, associate professor of English and comparative literature.
The discussion is free and open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. in the Hussey Room of the Michigan League, located on North University Street on U-M’s Central Campus.
