Jewish feminism, women’s liberation activists headline U-M symposium

EVENT: “Jewish Feminisms/American Visions: Questions from Fifty Years of Activism”

PLACE: U-M School of Social Work, Room 1840, 1080 South University Ave., Ann Arbor

DETAILS: Veteran activists from the women’s liberation and Jewish feminism movements will gather together with contemporary leaders in the American Jewish community to consider the role of Jewish identity in the framing and development of second-wave American feminism.

The event features 36 pioneering and contemporary feminist activists, leaders and thinkers including:

  • Miriam Hawley, co-founder of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, which publishes “Our Bodies, Ourselves”
  • Vivian Rothstein, co-founder of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, one of the first women’s liberation organizations of the 1960s
  • Letty Cottin Pogrebin, co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, Ms. Foundation for Women, Free to Be Foundation and several Black-Jewish and Palestinian-Jewish dialogue groups
  • Nylah Burton, a writer of contemporary ideas on sexual assault, intersections of race and gender, and Black-Jewish identities
  • Irena Klepfisz, author, poet and one of many lesbians who challenged the Jewish community to expand its vision of Jewish identity and possibility
