New rates for Family Housing apartments and townhouses, effective
This year’s residence hall rate increase proposal consists of three primary components: a 2.05 percent increase for general expenses, a 1.97 percent increase for capital renewal projects and 0.93 percent for increased costs in data network service charges.
The capital renewal project component will finance the next phase of upgrading the fire protection systems in the residence halls. Part of last year’s rate proposal included the financing of the electrical upgrade and fire alarm system in East Quad. This year’s proposal will include upgrades to the fire alarm and smoke detection systems in four residence halls (Mosher Jordan, Barbour, Markley and Newberry).
The increase in student room data network services reflects significant increases in data network use by students living in the residence halls. In fact, 46 percent of all U-M Internet traffic is from student data network utilization in the residence halls.
Included in the Family Housing rate is a 1.47 percent increase for general expenses and a 2.53 percent increase for capital renewal projects. The Family Housing capital renewal increase will be directed toward electrical systems upgrades in Northwood III apartments.
