Spring commencement exercises on April 26-27

ShalalaANN ARBOR—William H. Gray III, president and chief executive officer of the United Negro College Fund and former U.S. congressman, and Donna E. Shalala, president of the University of Miami and former U.S. secretary of health and human services, will give commencement addresses at the University of Michigan graduation ceremonies April 26-27.Gray
Honorary degrees will be awarded to Gray; Shalala; Donald A. Glaser, professor of physics and of molecular and cell biology, University of California, Berkeley, and winner of the 1960 Nobel Prize in physics; and John Rich, award-winning television and film director and producer.
Gray will give the main speech at the Spring Commencement on April 27 in Michigan Stadium. At this event, beginning at 9:15 a.m., honorary degrees will be conferred and all undergraduate degree candidates will be recognized. Marit Dewhurst will make remarks on behalf of the graduating students.
Shalala will be the main speaker at the University Graduate Exercises in Hill Auditorium on April 26. Doctoral candidates and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies master’s degree candidates will be honored at the ceremony, beginning at 3 p.m.
The U-M’s schools and colleges also will hold their own recognition ceremonies for their graduating students.
Altogether, some 6,000 students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this spring.

Spring Commencement, 9:15 a.m., April 27, Michigan Stadium
Tickets will be distributed 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., April 22-25, in Michigan Union Pond Room. Bachelor’s degree candidates are eligible for up to eight tickets, and graduate degree candidates, including those participating in the University Graduate Exercises on April 26, up to four tickets. Identification must be presented.
Extra tickets, if available, will be distributed to graduates and candidates on a first-come, first-served basis 8 a.m.-12 noon, April 26.

Spring Commencement will be in Michigan Stadium regardless of the weather. However, students will receive up to two “rain” tickets for seating in Crisler Arena in case of inclement weather for their guests who will be able to view the ceremony on large video screens in Crisler.
Coolers, beverages, food, camcorder cases, backpacks, signs, banners, balloons, balls, large camera bags, and items mounted on poles are prohibited inside Michigan Stadium.
University Graduate Exercises, 3 p.m., April 26, Hill Auditorium
Up to six tickets per graduate or candidate will be distributed 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
A reception will be held on the second floor of the Michigan League following the Graduate Exercises.
