11th Annual U-M Energy Fest 2006: Sept. 12, 14
ANN ARBOR—The 11th Annual University of Michigan Energy Fest 2006 next week will showcase the University’s efforts and commitment to energy conservation, energy efficiency and alternative energy technologies.
University staff and other affiliated organizations will be available with information and displays that identify opportunities to conserve energy and contribute to a sustainable society. The event is free and open to the public.
Energy Fest will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 12) on the Central Campus Diag with music entertainment by Covert Operations from noon to 1 p.m. The festival continues on the North Campus Portico Plaza at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 14). A lecture by Jennifer Sprout of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities will conclude the festival at 2:30 pm at the Lurie Engineering Center. Titled ” Green Roofs” the Last Urban Frontier,” Sprout’s message will explore the history, components, benefits and obstacles of building green roofs.
“As high energy bills are making an impact on everyone, this event continues to grow,” said Stephen Kunselman, festival coordinator and energy management liaison in U-M’s Plant Operations department. “We want to keep spreading the word and increasing interest among our students, faculty and staff about ways each person can help reduce energy use. In keeping with the tradition of this event, we’ll have giveaways, fun quizzes and prizes. “
The festival, sponsored by U-M’s Center for Sustainable Systems of the School of Natural Resources & Environment and U-M’s Plant Operations department, will include several non-campus organizations. These include Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (transportation & commuting options), city of Ann Arbor Energy Office (alternative fuels program), DTE (energy efficiency & renewable energy program) and Madison Electric Company (energy efficient lighting).
Some U-M energy efforts that will be included in the festival include recycling, environmental stewardship, bicycle registration, alternative transportation and the student Solar Car Team.
