World-acclaimed artist to lecture on film, music, language

ANN ARBOR—Through Bruno Monsaingeon’s engaging films, audiences have seen up-close the engaging personalities and creative processes of the world’s greatest musicians, including Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrakh, Nadai Boulanger, Yehudi Menuhin.

Beginning March 16, the acclaimed French documentary filmmaker will be in residence at the University of Michigan’s Residential College, where he will teach classes on film, music and language.

During the five-day residency, Monsaingeon will hold a master class on chamber music, a creative musicianship class on songwriting and composition, and a translations seminar in the foreign language program. The residency is collaboration between the Residential College and Ars Poetica Chamber Orchestra led by Anatoli Cheiniouk.

In addition to his celebrated work as a filmmaker and writer, Monsaingeon is a renowned violinist and composer.

The public is invited to the free events below:

  • “Richter: The Enigma”—A 1998 documentary on Sviatislav Richter, one of the greatest performers of the 20th century. The interviews are also published in Monsaingeon’s book, “Sviatislav Richter: Notebooks and Conversations.” 3 p.m. March 16 at Michigan Theatre, 603 E. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor.
  • Screening of “Glenn Gould: Hereafter”—Monsaigeon’s 2005 film focuses on the pianist Gould?s virtuosity in a portrait of eccentricity and spontaneity. 8 p.m. March 18, East Quad Auditorium, 701 E. University, Ann Arbor.
