ANN ARBOR—When the University of Michigan Indoor Practice Facility for Intercollegiate Football on State Street is completed this August, the venue will be named after an individual with strong ties not only to the athletic department but to the entire university.

The U-M Board of Regents formally designated the facility as the Al Glick Field House at a meeting Thursday.

“The entire Michigan Athletic Department owes a debt of gratitude to Al Glick and his family for the help they have provided our programs,” said Bill Martin, U-M director of athletics. “Naming this facility in Al’s honor is a wonderful way of giving him the recognition he really deserves.”

Glick’s company, Alro Steel Corp., has also supported the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital, but through the years, the Glick Family—and especially Al—has shown support for the U-M football program. Through his encouragement, his entire family participated in the gift commitment of $8.7 million for the field house, including his son, Randy, nephews Barry and Carl, and others.

“When I arrived in Ann Arbor just over one year ago, Al Glick was one of the first people to greet me,” said Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez. “The support he has provided this football program has been amazing. My staff and I feel privileged that this year’s team will be the first to practice in the Al Glick Field House.

“Al Glick and his family are not only great friends to the Michigan football program but they are great friends to our entire university.”

Al Glick has a 50-year relationship with Michigan athletics. His older brother, Robert, attended U-M, and it was through him that Glick made his first connection.

“With Michigan’s new field house, Al Glick and his family will now get the recognition they deserve for their long-standing and unwavering support,” Martin said.
