Credentials for child welfare to be discussed at Fauri Lecture

EVENT: “Credentials and Competencies for Child Welfare Best Practice: A Topic for Serious Debate, Discussion, and Timely Decisions” will be discussed during the Fedele F. and Iris M. Fauri Memorial Lecture.

Two keynote speakers and a panel of experts will address the national debate about whether a social work degree is the appropriate degree for a child welfare worker; provide perspectives on what child welfare workers need to know; and discuss cultural humility as an approach to training workers to address the needs of diverse populations in child welfare, trauma-focused interventions in child welfare, and children and families of color in the child welfare system.

Keynote speakers include:

? Joan Zlotnik, executive director of the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research, who will discuss “Social work education and child welfare practice: A national debate about the relevance to social work.”

? Carol Siemon, director of the Child Welfare Training Institute, who will address “What skills and knowledge do schools of social work need to teach potential child welfare workers so they are adequately prepared? A view from the field.”

Panelists include: Kathleen Coulborn Faller, U-M professor of social work; Robert Ortega, U-M associate professor of social work; James Henry, professor of social work at Western Michigan University; Gary Anderson, director of the School of Social Work at Michigan State University; and Cassandra Bowers, assistant clinical professor of social work at Wayne State University.

Those attending the event can earn 2.5 continuing education units hours in social work.

The Fauri Memorial Lecture Series on child welfare is presented annually in recognition of former U-M Dean and Vice President Fedele F. Fauri and his wife. His leadership and accomplishments in child welfare spanned nearly 50 years.
