ANN ARBOR—To fill two current vacancies, Margaret Marchak and David Masson have been appointed associate vice president and deputy general counsel in the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President and General Counsel, pending approval by the Board of Regents.

Masson, who began his new role on March 1, joined the OGC staff in 2000, holding primary responsibility for labor and employment matters. Formerly, Masson served as chief assistant corporation counsel for the City of Detroit Law Department in the Labor/Workers Compensation Division.

Masson received his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in political science from U-M and his law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

“As an experienced and successful litigator, David brings broad and deep knowledge of the University and the legal community to the deputy role,” said Suellyn Scarnecchia, vice president and general counsel.

Marchak will arrive on April 5 to lead legal matters in the U-M Health System. She is currently a shareholder with the national health law firm of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath and Lyman, PLLC in Troy, Mich.

Marchak has concentrated on health law in a variety of practice settings since 1983. A current emphasis in her practice is health information technology. In addition to working in private law firms, Marchak has prosecuted civil health care fraud cases for the U.S. Attorney’s Office and worked as in-house counsel for Mercy Health Services.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts, with honors, and Master of Business Administration degrees from U-M and her law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

Scarnecchia added, “Margaret’s extensive experience in health care law at local, regional and national levels will add valuable expertise and perspective to our busy Health System Legal Office.This is a field that changes rapidly and her practice has been and will continue to be on the cutting edge.”
