EVENT: “Perspectives on Leadership from the Nation’s Doctor”

Jerome Adams, the 20th surgeon general of the United States from 2017 to 2021, served during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and led the Coronavirus Task Force.

He was at the forefront of America’s most pressing health challenges, overseeing responses to three Category 5 hurricanes and a global pandemic. In conversation with School of Public Health Dean F. DuBois Bowman, Adams will offer insights into leadership in times of crisis and the importance of health equity.

A licensed anesthesiologist with a master’s degree in public health, Adams is currently a distinguished professor of practice in the departments of Pharmacy Practice and Public Health at Purdue University, where he also serves as a presidential fellow and executive director of Purdue’s Health Equity Initiatives. Prior to becoming U.S. surgeon general, he ran the Indiana State Department of Health and led Indiana’s response to Ebola, Zika and HIV crises.

In addition to his recent COVID-19 work, Adams has partnered with and assisted organizations as they navigate the opioid epidemic, maternal health inequities, rising rates of chronic disease and rising suicide rates. He also provides guidance on how businesses can become better stewards and stakeholders in promoting community health.
