Advisory: General Motors’ filing of an amicus brief

The following statement was issued today (July 17) by University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger, in response to the filing of an amicus brief by General Motors in support of the U-M’s defense of its admissions policies in two lawsuits.

“I’m extremely pleased that General Motors has expressed its strong support for the importance of diversity in preparing educated and competitive workers for today’s increasingly global economy. The amicus brief submitted today shows that the University’s ability to enroll a diverse student population is not only key to a quality education but essential to the economic vitality of our state and the nation.

“General Motors has a long history of demonstrating its commitment to diversity in the workforce and in business practices. General Motors’ amicus brief further underscores the link between higher education and business—diversity is as important in achieving educational quality as it is to producing global economic competitiveness. We are deeply gratified by General Motors’ support of our educational objectives.”
