Advisory: Learning Coalition schedules annual meeting

The Southeastern Michigan Math-Science Learning Coalition will meet on Saturday, Oct. 13, 9-11 a.m., at the MSU Washtenaw County 4-H Extension, 300 Parkland Plaza (off Jackson between Wagner and Zeeb Roads).

The focus of the meeting will be on after-school clubs and activities. It also will highlight the coalition’s support for the national Afterschool Alliance and its scheduled nationwide “Lights On Afterschool!” event scheduled for Oct. 11. Featured speakers will include: David Coupland, describing local Computer Challenge Clubs; Lefiest Galimore and Doris Sperling, from Ann Arbor’s Family Learning Institute; Debra Hamann, on the University of Michigan’s Reach Out! science clubs for elementary school children; Susan Shoemaker, adviser to Pontiac’s Youth Task Force on the Environment; Jeff Kass of the teen poetry club at The Neutral Zone; Maria Haapala, who will describe the 4-H training available for clubs and community groups, based on the Search Institute‘s “Asset Approach”; Dan Bassil, who oversees the city-wide Tutor Mentor Connection in Chicago.”This is a wonderful opportunity for parents, youth, educators, and business and community members to learn about some of the excellent and effective after school programs in our area,” said organizer Jeannine LaSovage. “The meeting is open to anyone interested in working with youth.”Organizational support for the Learning Coalition is provided by the K-12 education outreach program of the U-M’s Center for Ultrafast Optical Science. The center is funded by the National Science Foundation.
