CEO of Intel to speak at 2003-2004 Goff Smith Lecture

EVENT: Craig R. Barrett, CEO of Intel Corp., will deliver the Goff Smith Lecture and receive the Goff Smith Prize, which is the University of Michigan College of Engineering’s highest external honor for achievements in science and engineering. Barrett will discuss the impact of digital technology on organizations and individuals, and review trends, emerging fields and opportunities for technology advancements.

Barrett joined Intel in 1974 as technology development manager. He was named a vice president in 1984 and promoted to senior vice president in 1987, then executive vice president in 1990. He was elected to Intel’s board of directors in 1992 and became COO in 1993. In May 1997, he became Intel’s fourth president and was named CEO in 1998.

The Goff Smith Lecture is named for U-M alumnus Goff Smith, who received a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1938 and a master’s in business administration in 1939 from U-M. Now retired, Smith spent his business career at Amsted Industries of Chicago, rising to chairman and CEO in 1980. He continues to serve on the Amsted Industries Foundation, and over the years has made many contributions to the College of Engineering and U-M. The lecture is free and open to the public.
