China expert to discuss U.S.-Chinese relations under Obama

EVENT: The University of Michigan’s Kenneth Lieberthal, one of the world’s foremost experts on China, will deliver the Ross School of Business’ 42nd annual William K. McInally Memorial Lecture. His talk, “U.S.-China Relations in the Obama Administration: Continuities and Changes,” is free to the public.

Lieberthal is the William Davidson Professor of Business Administration at the Ross School, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Political Science, Distinguished Fellow and Director for China at the William Davidson Institute, and a faculty associate at the Center for Chinese Studies. He is currently on leave as a Visiting Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at The Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

During the Clinton administration, Lieberthal served as special assistant to the president for national security affairs and was the National Security Council’s senior director for Asia. He also was a consultant for the Department of State during the Carter and Reagan administrations and has consulted for the United Nations Association, among others.

Lieberthal’s research focuses on the evolution of China’s political economy, multinational corporate investment in China and India, foreign policy decision-making in China, U.S. foreign policy, Asian security issues and U.S.-China cooperation on energy and climate change.

He has written and edited many books and journal articles on China, including “Governing China: From Revolution Through Reform” and “Policy Making in China: Leaders, Structures and Processes.”

The McInally Lecture began in 1966 in memory of William K. McInally, who served on the University of Michigan Board of Regents from 1960 until 1964. Past speakers include Madeleine Albright, Andrew Young, Martha Seger, F. Lee Bailey, C.K. Prahalad, Richard Tedlow, Zainab Salbi and Jerry White.
