ANN ARBOR—Forecasts for the U.S. and Michigan economies and consumer outlook for 2003 will highlight the University of Michigan’s 50th Anniversary Economic Outlook Conference Nov. 21-22 at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St. Saul H. Hymans, U-M professor of economics and statistics and director of the Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics (RSQE), will open the conference with a presentation of “The U.S. Economic Outlook” at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 21. Richard T. Curtin, director of the Surveys of Consumers at the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR), will follow with “The Consumer Outlook for 2002” at 11 a.m. The next day (Nov. 22) at 9:30 a.m., U-M economists Joan Crary and George Fulton will present “The 2002 Outlook for the Michigan Economy.” Other presentations during the two-day conference include: ·  “The Past & Future of U.S. Monetary Policy” by Herbert E. Neil Jr., president of Financial and Economic Strategies Corp. (Nov. 21). ·  “The Outlook for the U.S. Economy in a Global Setting” by Allen Sinai, founder and president of Decision Economics Inc. (Nov. 21). ·  “Risks for the U.S. Dollar in the Foreign Exchange Market” by Michael R. Rosenberg, managing director and head of foreign exchange market research at Deutsche Bank (Nov. 21). ·  “Finding the Peaks and Troughs in the U.S. Macroeconomy” by economist Robert E. Hall of Stanford University (Nov. 21). ·  “Developments in the Michigan Labor Market” by U-M economist George E. Johnson (Nov. 22). ·  “The Development of Productivity Growth in U.S. Industries” by economist Kevin J. Stiroh, research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (Nov. 22). The RSQE conference’s 50th Anniversary Celebratory Banquet dinner at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 21 will feature former RSQE director and Nobel Laureate Lawrence R. Klein discussing “The Role of Surveys and Models in Economic Forecasting: Two Icons of Ann Arbor.” Daniel B. Suits and Harold T. Shapiro, past RSQE directors, also will give remarks.
