EVENT: The University of Michigan holds its annual commemoration of Constitution Day, featuring Michael Stokes Paulsen, Distinguished University Chair and law professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.

His lecture is titled “The Sweep and Force of Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment: The Constitution’s Disqualification from Office of Oath-Breaking Insurrectionists.”

Paulsen is the co-author, along with William Baude, of “The Sweep and Force of Section Three,” forthcoming in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

In recent months, discussions have circulated among legal scholars about how Section 3 of the 14th Amendment could be enforced against those seeking to hold office. In particular, according to the Conservative authors, it disqualifies former President Donald Trump, and potentially many others, because of their participation in the attempted overthrow of the 2020 presidential election.

A federal law requires that all schools receiving federal funding recognize the Constitution’s “birthday,” which is Sept. 17.
