Dance for Mother Earth Powwow returns to U-M’s Crisler Center
EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
DATE: 10:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. April 6 and 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. April 7, 2013
EVENT: The 41st annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow will host 200 dancers, 10 drums and more than 40 vendors and artisans to celebrate Native American cultures and languages, traditions and foods from around the U.S. and Canada.
According to USA Today, Dance for Mother Earth is one of the “10 great places to be wowed by American Indian culture.” The Ann Arbor Powwow is a celebratory and educational family-friendly event that is now one of the largest university powwows in the nation.
Rooted in traditional Native cultures, Dance for Mother Earth was founded by a small group of U-M Native American students and community members to celebrate and honor the sacred relationships between the people and the planet.
Highlights of the 2013 Powwow include dance specials for the traditional men’s category, in which participants connect to the traditional ways through movement. Everyone in attendance will be invited to join the noncompetitive, informal two-step social dance special. An honor song in memory of Native American veteran Art Brant, head of Powwow security for many years, will commemorate his decades-long leadership and dedication to Dance for Mother Earth.
