Design and book conservationists to speak

ANN ARBOR—Friends of the University Library together with the Book Club of Detroit will present “Design, Conservation, Bound Together” on May 5 at 4 p.m. in the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan. This special event features the husband-and-wife team of Don Etherington and Monique Lallier, who will provide a glimpse into the worlds of restoration and fine bookbinding. The event is open to the public.

Don Etherington is known in the profession as a conservator par excellence. He began training for his career in 1948 at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, England, where he studied bookbinding methods and theory under the legendary George Frewin. He is president and owner of Etherington Conservation Center and during his career he has provided services to a wide range of institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, New York University, and the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Monique Lallier is a noted book artist and bookbinder with more than 30 years of experience. Her studio, Monique Lallier Design Book Bindings, specializes in bindings that represent the marriage of traditional high quality craftsmanship with contemporary original designs. She will provide insight into the kind of labor that goes into the production of fine bookbinding, and will also bring samples of her work.
