EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 6-8 p.m. June 18, 2013

PLACE: First Congregational Church of Detroit, 33 E. Forest St.

EVENT: The University of Michigan and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences encourage members of the southeast Michigan community to attend a forum about air pollution to learn about research being conducted in the Detroit area. The public also is invited to voice concerns to government officials about issues related to air pollution.

Dr. Linda Birnbaum, director of the NIEHS (part of the National Institutes of Health), is a featured speaker at the event.

Detroit and southeast Michigan is a densely populated area with a large number of major air pollution sources. To address health concerns related to air pollution, U-M is engaged in several research projects, including the Environmental Health Science Lifestage Exposure and Adult Disease Center, which is funded by NIEHS.

The forum will include activities for children, Spanish/Arabic/American Sign Language translation, raffle prizes and light refreshments.

Transportation will be provided from several locations (pick up at 5:15 p.m. from Detroit locations; leave the church after the event at 8:30 p.m.):

  • Clark Park: Corner of Clark St. and W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit
  • Samaritan Center: 5555 Conner St., Detroit
  • Don Bosco Hall: 19321 W. Chicago St., Detroit
  • Kemeny Recreational Center: 2260 S. Fort St., Detroit
  • U-M School of Public Health: 1415 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor (pick up at 4 p.m.)

For additional information on transportation, contact Myra Tetteh, (734) 764-8632 or [email protected].

The forum is one in a series of similar NIEHS community forums across the country focusing on environmental issues identified by local communities.
