Economists will address America’s post-crisis recovery

EVENT: A panel of University of Michigan faculty and alumni economists will discuss “The Post-Crisis Recovery: Prospects and Policy Choices” at a free, public forum.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students and members of the community to hear U-M economics faculty and alumni share their opinions on where the U.S. economy is headed and what government policies are needed,” said Joel Slemrod, chair and professor of the U-M Department of Economics. “We expect a lively exchange of views about what the headlines really mean for students and others seeking jobs, as well as for businesses planning for the future.”
Slemrod, the Paul W. McCracken Collegiate Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy, director of the Office of Tax Policy Research at Michigan’s Ross School of Business, and co-author of “Taxing Ourselves: A Citizen’s Guide to the Debate over Taxes,” will be joined on the panel by:
- David Berson, PMI chief economist and strategist. He was previously vice president and chief economist at Fannie Mae and has served as staff economist on the Council of Economic Advisers and as economic analyst at the Treasury Department and the Office of Special Trade Representative.
- Peter Hooper, managing director and chief economist/global head of economics for Deutsche Bank Securities. He served 26 years at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C., holding numerous positions, including as an economist on the Federal Open Market Committee and as deputy director of the Division of International Finance.
- Allen Sinai, chief global economist, president and co-founder of Decision Economics Inc. He developed one of the largest, most accurate, large-scale econometric models of the U.S. economy and financial markets, and is a pioneer in the information systems approach to analyzing economies and financial markets. He is a former managing director, chief global economist and director at Lehman Economics Group and Lehman Brothers Global Economics.
- James Hines Jr., the Richard A. Musgrave Collegiate Professor of Economics, the L. Hart Wright Collegiate Professor of Law and research director of the Office of Tax Policy Research.Top of Form He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, research director of the International Tax Policy Forum, co-editor of the American Economic Association’s Journal of Economic Perspectives, and was an economist at the U.S. Department of Commerce.
