Educator, author, city planner Alexander Garvin to speak
ANN ARBOR—”The American City: What Works, What Doesn’t?” will be explored by Alexander Garvin on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the University of Michigan’s Rackham Amphitheater.
Garvin, an architect, city planner, real estate developer and manager, educator and author of a book of the same title as his U-M presentation, analyzed more than 250 programs and projects seeking answers to what works and what doesn’t in American cities.
Garvin will explore the very best urban and suburban projects conceived and implemented across the country, uncovering the philosophy behind them and investigating what made them successful and how they made our cities better.
Garvin is currently a faculty member at Yale University and a member of the New York City Planning Commission. He has also acted as New York City’s deputy commissioner of housing and director of comprehensive planning. Garvin’s appearance is sponsored by U-M’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
